Welcome

Dear parents,

In light of the current lockdown, I have created this site for parents – specifically of Grade 1 children – who want to keep their developing minds occupied in a constructive way. The topics that I cover have been taken from work that I would ordinarily do with my Grade 1’s during the second term. Teachers all have their own way of presenting content, so there may be slight differences between how I present these to how your child’s teacher would, but the differences shouldn’t be too big.

My content is in English, and thanks to my colleague, Jolindie van Schalkwyk, there are Afrikaans lessons available too. All the printable resources used in the lessons can be found under the Downloads tab. Also found in Downloads is a list of free online resources for Grades R-12, as well as workbooks for Grades 1-3 that the Department of Education has asked teachers to share with parents.

I would encourage you to start from Day 1 (or Dag 1 for Afrikaans) and work through the days systematically as many of the concepts build on one another and this sequence also ensures that there is a bit of variety in the work. However, the work has gradually increased in difficulty, so feel free to jump in on one of the more recent days if you wish. The search function also allows you to find specific topics that you may require help with. Wherever possible, the resources used in the videos have been posted either to be printed if you have access to a home printer, or to be copied by hand if you don’t.

There are useful resources available for ways that you and your kids can help others during the Lockdown under Help Out.

I hope that this will be a helpful resource for you and your child.

Lisa
